Bay du Nord Snubbed as Hogan Liberals Fail to Stand Up for Newfoundland and Labrador
St. John’s, NL (September 12, 2025) – Tony Wakeham, Leader of the Progressive Conservative Party and MHA for Stephenville - Port au Port, says the exclusion of Bay du Nord from Mark Carney’s initial list of nation building projects is proof that Liberal Leader John Hogan has failed to put Newfoundland and Labrador first.
“Bay du Nord represents billions in investment, thousands of good jobs, and long-term prosperity for our province,” said Wakeham. “This omission from the initial national priority list is not just disappointing, it is a clear sign that the Hogan Liberals refuse to stand up for Newfoundland and Labrador, our workers, and our resources.”
Wakeham also criticized the Liberals for failing to secure the removal of the job-killing energy emissions reduction cap and for not reinstating the Atlantic Investment Tax Credit, both of which are critical to keeping Newfoundland and Labrador’s offshore oil and gas competitive.
“When it mattered most, John Hogan didn’t deliver,” said Wakeham. “Other provinces are securing priority projects and federal support while we have been left off the initial projects list. That is not bad luck. That is a failure of leadership.”
Wakeham says Bay du Nord should be front and center in national economic planning and that the Liberals’ anti-oil approach threatens jobs, investment, and the province’s future in an industry that has built Newfoundland and Labrador for decades.
“The Liberals have been anti-oil from day one and Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are paying the price,” added Wakeham. “Newfoundlanders and Labradorians deserve a government that will stand up for our workers, our resources, and our future. As Premier, I will put Newfoundland and Labrador first and I will get results. After 10 years, it’s time for a PC government that gets to work for all of us.”
