St. John's, NL (January 15, 2021) – Barry Petten, PC Shadow Minister of Industry, Energy and Technology and MHA for Conception Bay South, says more federal money for the Terra Nova Project comes with no commitment, no signatures, and no new jobs for Newfoundland and Labrador.
“The non-announcement of a non-binding memorandum of understanding for the Terra Nova project is another smoke and mirrors attempt by the Furey Liberals to support the oil and gas industry. The agreement comes with no jobs guarantees and is not itself a formal agreement,” said Petten.
“The people of the province can see through this attempt at appearing supportive of the oil and gas industry. We don’t need non-binding agreements. We need jobs.”
Petten noted previous funding announcements from the federal pool of money that were quickly followed by layoffs in the oil and gas sector. He says on top of that, adjusting royalty regimes leaves the province at risk of lost provincial revenue when the oil and gas industry restarts.
“The Furey Liberals are opening the doors for less oil and gas royalties for our province in the middle of a fiscal crisis. It’s a non-announcement that risks an even worse fiscal future for the province,” said Petten.
