(January 18, 2021) – Kristina Ennis, PC Candidate for St. John’s West, and Tony Wakeham, PC Candidate for Stephenville-Port au Port, are calling Premier Andrew Furey out for this doublespeak on the Greene Report.
Furey issued a tweet over the weekend wherein he reminded the province that Moya Greene is not the Premier (https://twitter.com/FureyAndrew/status/1350525472443084800). The Premier said:
“Dame Moya Greene is not the Premier. They (the PERT) are tasked with generating big ideas to reimagine government — with government making decisions.”
Furey went on to speak with media over the weekend, stating the recommendations from the Greene Report – which the Liberals did not want the public to see before the election was called – will be given a round of consultations and debate before being implemented.
The problem is that’s not what Premier Furey told his own Finance Minister.
According to Minister Siobhan Coady’s mandate letter, issued by the Premier himself, the Minister is to “implement” the Greene Report. There’s no mention of “consultation.”
“Specifically, I ask you to work with me to oversee and implement recommendations of the Premier's Economic Recovery Team,” reads the mandate letter, written by Furey and delivered to Coady in September (https://www.gov.nl.ca/wp-content/uploads/FIN-Mandate-Letter.pdf).
“Today’s revelation proves Andrew Furey intends to implement the Greene Report – cuts and all - full stop,” said Kristina Ennis, PC Candidate for St. John’s West. “He thought he could pull a fast one on the voters, but we’re not going to let him get away with it.”
Tony Wakeham says voters will be alarmed when they learn that, when it comes to the Greene Report, the Premier has been saying one thing to his Cabinet Ministers and another to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador.
“Here’s just one more example of Liberal doublespeak on critical issues,” said Wakeham. “The jig is up. How much longer does the Premier intend to keep up this charade? It’s time to come clean about his secret plan for big cuts and job losses.”
