(January 22, 2021) – PC Leader Ches Crosbie says it’s time for Newfoundland and Labrador to finally get a fair deal with Ottawa – and he’s the tough negotiator to deliver.
For five years, the Liberals have touted a strong relationship with Ottawa, but have yet to deliver anything meaningful to the province, says Crosbie.
“Newfoundland and Labrador has long been an afterthought in Confederation. Now, the province is at the brink. Five years of handshakes and back scratching have done nothing to improve the lives of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. It’s time to change negotiators and fight for a New Deal with Ottawa,” said Crosbie.
A PC government will:
• Fight for a new fiscal arrangement with Ottawa to reflect the unique circumstances of geography and demographics facing the province
• Renegotiate the Equalization Formula to stop penalizing our province due to our bountiful natural resource development.
• Demand Ottawa take an Equity Stake in the Muskrat Falls development project to reflect Ottawa’s part of the deal and once and for all negotiate a fair Rate Mitigation plan for Newfoundland and Labrador.
• Negotiate Joint Management of our fisheries, modeled after the Atlantic Accord agreement, pioneered under a PC administration.
“There are tough negotiations in front of Newfoundland and Labrador to secure a stable future for our province. Who would you choose to negotiate on your behalf: an inexperienced doctor or a hardnosed, lawyer with a long track record of proven results?” said Crosbie.
“For years I’ve fought for justice for my clients. It’s time to fight for justice for Newfoundland and Labrador.”
