(January 29, 2021) – PC Leader Ches Crosbie says joint management of fisheries in Newfoundland and Labrador is essential to sustainable job growth in the industry.
“Sustainable fisheries are key to the Newfoundland and Labrador economy in so many areas. That’s why we’ve brought forward a responsible, sustainable plan for the continued expansion of our fisheries,” said Crosbie.
“We will help fish harvesters and coastal communities rejuvenate their economies by working directly with those in the industry – not government bureaucrats – to develop policies that work for them.”
A PC government will:
• Following through on the long-standing PC Party commitment to joint management of the fishery, in the model of the Atlantic Accord.
• Empower the Fish Processing Licensing Board to inquire about foreign ownership of fish processing operations.
• Review regulations surrounding unintended by-catch to limit waste and improve economic opportunity.
• Support the traditional sealing industry and work with the federal government to create and protect jobs in the industry.
• Protect fish populations from predation by seal populations.
• Expand an environmentally sustainable aquaculture industry and streamline existing regulations to improve transparency and monitoring of the industry.
“Let’s get our fisheries growing. Let’s reap the benefits so our communities are sustainable for long generations to come,” said Crosbie.
“Let’s support important jobs in our fishing industry – and even more jobs through value-added production and aquaculture. Let’s ensure Newfoundland and Labrador is a global fisheries leader, the way we were for long centuries.”
