(February 10, 2021) – “The people of our province are suffering right now. To those who have been infected: stay strong. We can get through the difficult time ahead. To the children, parents, grandparents, frontline workers, educators, election workers, and everyone feeling stress and fear right now through this outbreak: we will get through this together, by working together to keep each other safe.
I am calling on the Premier and Chief Electoral Officer to find a way to delay Election Day, to allow electionand public health officials time to ensure the public can vote safely. Public health and safety is paramount. Mr. Furey called this election in the middle of the pandemic and now we must deal with the situation before us.
The right to vote is sacred within our constitution. A safe plan to allow the people to safely exercise their right must be found before Voting Day takes place.
Andrew Furey gambled on this election call. COVID-19 called his bluff. Now, the people of the province are paying the price.
To hear Dr. Fitzgerald say that the Province has to ‘find a way’ to make voting safe on Saturday is cold comfort to those who wish to exercise their democratic right. Andrew Furey could have avoided this scenario if he listened to the Legislature when we offered to move the election to October, following vaccine rollout.
Andrew Furey had a choice, and he chose politics over public safety. He should face the consequences of his actions on Election Day, whenever it is safe for that to occur.”
