(February 23, 2021) – PC Party Leader Ches Crosbie says a PC Government will conduct an immediate, comprehensive review of COVID-19 point-of-entry testing in other jurisdictions.

Crosbie says a PC government will use the findings to identify best practices and implement point-of-entry testing within 14 days of taking office.

“If done properly, point-of-entry testing would be an extra layer of security, catching some people carrying COVID-19 earlier than they would otherwise be identified,” said Crosbie.

“Point-of-entry testing can help us avoid an economic shutdown and all of the societal problems that come with it, including lost jobs and income, delayed medical appointments, and mental health concerns.”

Crosbie notes the town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay is now calling for point-of-entry rapid testing for all travel into Labrador, including essential travel.

Liberal leader Andrew Furey has rejected calls to implement point-of-entry testing dismissing evidence-based, scientific reports that support its use. According to one McMaster University report, prepared after a large-scale scientific study:

“In addition to demonstrating the feasibility of conducting COVID-19 testing at the airport, the study has also shown the effectiveness of a self-collected COVID-19 sample using a cheek and nasal swab that is completed in minutes.”

Crosbie also points out several other jurisdictions have embraced forms of point-of-entry testing, including Nova Scotia and Alberta.

“Andrew Furey continues to stubbornly ignore the science supporting point-of-entry testing,” says Crosbie.

“A PC Government will act to keep our economy open and, more importantly, keep our people safe.”
