(March 3, 2021) – Paul Dinn, PC Candidate for Topsail-Paradise, says a PC Government supports the protection of pets and animals throughout the province and would launch a full review of legislation upon taking office.

“Pets and animals play a huge role in families and in supporting mental health, especially through the pandemic. They become integral parts of the family and deserve to be fully protected by the law,” said Dinn.

“A PC government would review the Animal Health and Protection Act to ensure best practices are in place in this province to ensure the well-being of animals throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.”
Dinn says any such review would include consultation with stakeholders, such as local SPCA chapters, kennel clubs, veterinarians, animal rights advocates, and the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary in addition to the top-to-bottom review of provincial legislation.

The review would include consideration for breeding licenses, enhanced training for enforcement officers, and restrictions on animal tethering.
“It’s important to get such a review right and that means listening to all the voices at the table. We all want the same thing: to protect pets and other animals within our society. The PC Party is committed to ensuring the review is as broad and far reaching as possible to ensure the best legislation comes from the review,”
said Dinn.

“The last time this legislation was reviewed was in 2012 under a PC administration and a new PC government would renew the commitment to animal welfare throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.”
