(March 8, 2021) – Helen Conway Ottenheimer, PC Candidate for Harbour Main, and Sheila Fitzgerald, PC Candidate for St. Barbe-L’Anse aux Meadows, are extending best wishes to the women who inspire the entire province every single day in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The PC Party is proud to have nine strong women candidates in this election, with a strong suite of policies to advance women’s equality in the province under a PC government, including Lela Evans (Torngat Mountains), Kristina Ennis (St. John’s West), Robyn LeGrow (St. John’s Centre), Sue Collins (FogoCape Freels), Cindy Grant (Mount Pearl-Southlands), Charlene Walsh (Fortune Bay-Cape La Hune), and Rhonda Simms (Lewisporte-Twilingate).

“Every day I’m inspired by the strong women who are the backbone of the PC Party, whether on the executive, in the caucus, or in our field of candidates, our volunteers, constituency assistants and all those who make our party strong today and in the past,” said Conway Ottenheimer.

“More than representation, I know a PC government would fight every day to advance women’s equality and excellence throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.”

A PC government will:

• Immediately begin developing pay equity legislation to ensure women get the same
compensation as men in the workplace;
• Reinstate the standalone Status of Women portfolio that was ended under Andrew Furey;
• Ensure a Gender-Based Analysis Plus lens is applied to all government decisions;
• Enhance the representation of women in public services leadership positions and support gender
parity throughout government’s agencies, boards, and commissions;
• Require local benefits policies on public infrastructure projects to include women and other
underrepresented groups in our society get their fair share of work.

“Newfoundland and Labrador cannot achieve it’s full potential without the full participation and equal treatment of women throughout our society. The transgender population also needs to be included throughout our efforts for equality,” said Fitzgerald.

“We want to acknowledge and commend the women working hard and raising their voices throughout our province through these difficult times. Women will always have a seat at the table in a PC government, as we strive toward equality for all.”
