(March 22, 2021) – Shannon Tobin, PC Candidate for Lake Melville, says the on-going caretaker mode of government will see vital infrastructure projects in Labrador delayed, including a pre-feasibility study of a road to the North Coast.

In September, government set aside $200,000 for the study. Tobin is worried this project will not see any progress this year in light of the delay.

“The Liberal government has not moved on this critical project. It’s important to understand the issues that need to be addressed for the road to the North Coast, so the project can take the next steps,” said Tobin.

“A road to the North Coast is also an important part of the PC Party’s Blue Book, as we recognize the importance of this project to the future of the region.”

In addition, Tobin says efforts to pave route 520 to North West River were committed to previously, but again there appears to be no progress on the project.

“The Liberals promised upgrades to route 520, yet the project appears to be stalled. This road is a critical link for the residents in North West River and more delays for repairs means the road’s condition will continue to deteriorate,” said Tobin.

“I call on the Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure to give an update on these projects and ensure the people of Lake Melville aren’t left behind whenever construction season can begin. Andrew Furey’s reckless election call has put these projects in jeopardy and its time for the Liberals to clarify what work can be done this year.”
