(March 25, 2021) – PC Leader Ches Crosbie is urging Premier Andrew Furey to stand up for those who have been disenfranchised, left behind, and cast aside during this risky, unnecessary election campaign.
The 2021 general election has been fraught with problems since the COVID-19 outbreak tore through the province ahead of Election Day. As a result, thousands of people have been left without access to the ballot. The Premier has yet to speak up for those voters.
Crosbie says Progressive Conservatives have relentlessly fought for voters’ rights, while the Furey Liberals have remained silent.
“With today being the last day for votes to be received by Elections NL, Andrew Furey has one last chance to stand up for democracy and demand better for the voting public,” she Crosbie.
“Should he continue to sit on the sidelines while tens of thousands are shut out of the democratic process, his silence will speak volumes.”
Media reports suggest the maximum voter turnout in the province is 51 per cent, compared with almost 61 per cent in the 2019 election. Crosbie says that’s of great concern for the health of Newfoundland and Labrador democracy.
“The Premier seems to be picking and choosing the moments where he’s the Premier. He shows up on television amid the COVID-19 crisis, yet he’s silent on the democratic crisis unfolding before our very eyes,” said Crosbie.
“I have been proud to champion the thousands who have been shut out of the democratic process during this chaotic election. Andrew Furey needs to step up, show leadership, and advocate for the people of Newfoundland and Labrador – not just the Liberal Party.”
