(April 30, 2021) – Tony Wakeham, PC Opposition Shadow Minister of Finance and MHA for Stephenville-Port au Port, says today’s Audit of the Financial Statements of Newfoundland and Labrador shows the result of continued inaction from the Liberal government to fix the Province’s fiscal mess.
Wakeham thanked the Auditor General’s team for their sobering analysis, which shows just how little the Liberals have done to create jobs and grow the economy of Newfoundland and Labrador.
“For years the Liberals have been promising to get our province’s fiscal house in order, yet on every single metric the indicators continue to get worse. The Liberals have been slapping a new coat of paint on every budget since 2016 while the finances of the province get worse and worse every year,” said Wakeham.
“Raising taxes for the sake of raising taxes isn’t going to solve our fiscal problem. The PC Party has a dedicated strategy to grow jobs, expand our economy, and spend money smarter. It’s clear after six years the Liberals have no such plan.”
Wakeham says the only plan the Liberals seem to have, from Dame Moya Greene, continues to be hidden from public view.
Wakeham says the Auditor General’s report also focused on recommendations from a 2017 Auditor General report and how they are being implemented. Two of the recommendations without any action relate to monitoring road maintenance and planning repairs.
“I don’t think the people of Newfoundland and Labrador needed the Auditor General to tell them how the Liberal government has failed on road maintenance. Pick a road and drive for five minutes and you’ll see for yourself,” said Wakeham.
“To see concrete recommendations that would improve the safety of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians totally ignored by government is truly disheartening.”
