Liberals ignore Auditor General, stand by while roads decay: Brazil
“Today I presented an example of the poor conditions of the province’s roads from my own district, where this one pothole is responsible for at least four broken tires that I am aware of. But we know this is an issue across the province,” said Brazil.

(May 4, 2021) – PC Opposition Leader David Brazil today invited media to observe what quality road work looks like under a Liberal government.

“Today I presented an example of the poor conditions of the province’s roads from my own district, where this one pothole is responsible for at least four broken tires that I am aware of. But we know this is an issue across the province,” said Brazil.

“Last week, CAA Atlantic named their list of the 2021 Worst Roads in Atlantic Canada, with four roads from this province making the top ten list. It’s embarrassing – not to mention expensive – for the people of Newfoundland and Labrador.”

Last week’s release of the Auditor General report on recommendations made in a 2017 report showed the Liberals have totally ignored two recommendations aimed at improving the state of roads throughout the province.

Brazil says why the Liberals would ignore such key recommendations to protect the safety and wallet of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians is baffling.

“One of the recommendations was to establish a system to track which roads need attention. Another was to develop a structured maintenance program to dictate schedule and frequency of roadwork in our province,” said Brazil.

“It’s clear the intention of the Auditor General is for government to adopt a strategy that could lead to better roads in Newfoundland and Labrador. That means better infrastructure, safer roads, and more money in the pockets of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians that isn’t being spent on new tires.”
