(July 14, 2021) – Tony Wakeham, PC Shadow Minister for Finance and MHA Stephenville-Port au Port, is calling upon the Liberal Government to review the taxation on gasoline in efforts to lower the cost for residents of this province.
“A recent report from the Canadian Taxpayers Federation demonstrates that tax accounts for 35% of our gasoline prices. With gasoline prices at a historic high, and threatening to impact tourism, business, and families, it is time for the Liberal government to review provincial taxation in efforts to make gasoline more affordable,” said Wakeham.

Wakeham also noted that the Canadian Taxpayers Federation demonstrated that residents in this province are paying the highest tax on tax in Atlantic Canada.
“It is unacceptable that we are paying 5 cents per litre of tax on tax. Because of how gasoline prices are calculated, tax is paid on tax. Has the Liberal government asked the PUB to stop this practice while gasoline prices are historically high?” asked Wakeham
“We should not have to pay extraordinary high prices to visit our loved ones across the province. This Liberal government should take action to help our residents.”
