(July 27, 2021) – David Brazil, PC Opposition Leader and MHA for Conception Bay East-Bell Island, says the Liberals government has been shaky on its commitment to a 13.5 cents an hour electricity rate, but he hopes Premier Furey will keep his party’s promise.
“For three years now the Liberals have been promising a 13.5 cent electricity rate when rate mitigation negotiations conclude. Furey has been less certain in his language around the rate,” said Brazil.
“On April 21, the Premier said the rate would be ‘approximately’ 13.5 cents at commission. A few cents difference in that number means food out of the mouths and medicine out of the cabinets of the people of the province. We need clarity: will the Liberals deliver on their promise to the people of the province?”
On October 5, 2020, Finance Minister and Deputy Premier Siobhan Coady said:
“Whatever the rate is at the time will be the rate it is at the time. We absolutely know right at this moment it's just below 13.5 cents.”
“These are the words of Furey’s most trusted Minister. We can only hope that Furey can make good on the promises of his Minister and his government,” said Brazil.
Brazil notes the Premier has repeatedly stated that any agreement on rate mitigation would be brought to the House of Assembly for debate, as Furey stated on June 2, 2021:
“But I will assure the people of this province that whatever hydroelectric projects we're actively in discussions with will be brought to the House and there will be an open debate to make sure that people know what deals we're getting involved with, Mr. Speaker.”
“I wait with interest for the deal to be announced and when Furey will re-open the legislature to debate this important agreement for the people of the province,” said Brazil.
