Brazil says the Bell Island ferry system is a unique, commuter service in Newfoundland and Labrador that demands better service.

(August 6, 2021) – David Brazil, PC Opposition Leader and MHA for Conception Bay East-Bell Island, says the Bell Island ferry system is a unique, commuter service in Newfoundland and Labrador that demands better service.

“The residents of Bell Island need a ferry service that works for them. The people of Bell Island rely on the ferry to get to work, for medical appointments, and for essentials in their day-to-day life. The ferry is thier highway – and no commuter would put up with the delays seen by this service in recent memory,” said Brazil.

“When the service is down, the residents have no other options. The disruptions we’ve seen over the last weeks and months affect people’s lives. We need a reliable service, with staff located on site of the ferry, and with greater options for re-fits when the time for repair does come.”

Brazil, joined by members of the PC Opposition Caucus, stood with residents on the steps of Confederation Building on Friday to demand better for the people of Bell Island.

“Government is obligated to provide a level of ferry service acceptable to the people of Bell Island and today the residents of the island made it clear: what’s happening is not good enough,” said Brazil.

“It’s up to Minister Loveless and Premier Furey to listen to their voices and find solutions needed to get the ferries back in the water reliably.”
