Brazil calls on Furey to fund rescue efforts for missing Labrador vessel
Brazil says the federal Liberals have yet again failed the people of Labrador by prematurely calling off rescue efforts for a lost boat out of Mary’s Harbour.

(September 20, 2021) – David Brazil, PC Official Opposition Leader and MHA for Conception Bay East-Bell Island, says the federal Liberals have yet again failed the people of Labrador by prematurely calling off rescue efforts for a lost boat out of Mary’s Harbour.

“My thoughts are with the family of the missing fishers at this difficult time. I cannot imagine the emotions being felt by the family right now and I send them my deepest sympathies as this situation continues,” said Brazil.

“The search should not have been called off so quickly. It’s as simple as that. The federal Search and Rescue Inquiry is currently underway in Labrador, while this situation unfolds. It’s upsetting that while past failures to protect the people of Labrador are being investigated, another failure is happening before our eyes.”

Lela Evans, PC Opposition Shadow Minister of Labrador and Indigenous Affairs and MHA for Torngat Mountains, says the situation is a reminder of the importance of reliable search and rescue to Labradorians.
“We rely on the sea and land for work, recreation, and food. There has to be adequate search and rescue resources in place for Labradorians,” said Evans.

“I just sat through a week of the Ground Search and Rescue inquiry hearings listening to how gaps in services and resources failed Burton Winters. Now I listen to pleas for help from the families of the missing fishers from Mary’s Harbour. Gaps costs lives and that is not acceptable”

Brazil notes the provincial government has stepped in to fund search and rescue efforts in the past when the federal government pulled out of a search.

“In late May 2020, the province stepped up to fund the extended search for one of four lost fishers from the Grand Bank area. I think now is the time for the province to step up once again,” said Brazil.

“I call on Premier Furey: do the right thing. Fund this operation. Bring home the crew of the Island Lady.”
