(September 28, 2021) – Paul Dinn, PC Opposition Shadow Minister for Health and Community Services and MHA for Topsail-Paradise, says it’s time for Premier Furey to break his silence: when will in-vitro fertilization be available in Newfoundland and Labrador?
“It’s been seven months since the Premier personally promised increased access to in-vitro fertilization here in Newfoundland and Labrador and promised a clinic for our province during the campaign. It is also now months since Minister Haggie guaranteed a funding package for IVF travel within ‘weeks,’” said Dinn.
“Advocates are not having emails returned and I know their patience is growing thin.”
Dinn says in-vitro fertilization here at home should be part of the overall population growth strategy for the province.
“The financial and emotional burden faced by those seeking in-vitro services out of the province is immense. In-vitro fertilization services offered here at home will provide more families with easier access to the care needed to have children, and positively impact our demographic challenges. The Premier promised treatments in the province to relieve this burden and address population growth. He’s not following through,” said Dinn.
“The families who need these services cannot afford to wait any longer. Every day that passes is another day of frustration without any news. Newfoundland and Labrador needs happy, growing families. It’s time for the Premier and the Minister to provide some concise information to families in waiting and not further empty promises.”
