(December 14, 2021) – Tony Wakeham, PC Official Opposition Shadow Minister of Finance and MHA for Stephenville-Port au Port, says it’s outrageous for government to spend $5 million of taxpayer dollars on a report about the provincial government and not allow the public to see the results
“The taxpayers of Newfoundland and Labrador are funding yet another report by this Liberal government, and Minister Coady doesn’t think the public deserves to see the findings. It’s our money about our government and the Minister doesn’t think we have a right to see it for ourselves?” said Wakeham.
“This government is totally out of touch of the needs and the rights of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. The Minister should commit to publicly releasing the report upon receiving it.”
Wakeham says yet another report is just the latest example of taxpayer money being wasted by the Liberal government.
“Whether it’s $140,000 sofas or a $5 million report, the Liberals are committed to unnecessary spending. They have yet to take action on any of the reports they have commissioned, aside from commissioning more reports. Why should the taxpayers of Newfoundland and Labrador fund yet another report?” said Wakeham.
“The Liberals launched the Way Forward, they hired McKinsey and Company, they commissioned Moya Greene, they hired an American company to cut our healthcare for $35 million – why does the Liberal government think we need yet another multimillion-dollar review?”
Wakeham says the PC Official Opposition has asked numerous times to see the homework done to justify the Greene Report recommendations. He says today’s contract announcement is clearly meant to be that homework.
“Today’s unnecessary contract award shows the Greene Report was not backed up any actual analysis, so the Liberals need an American company to do the homework for them. It’s insulting to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador to claim there is no expertise in our province to make these decisions,” said Wakeham.
“Clearly, there’s no such expertise in this Liberal cabinet.”
