Patronage of failed Liberal candidates alive and well under Furey Government

(January 7, 2022) – Pleaman Forsey, MHA for Exploits, and Chris Tibbs, MHA for Grand Falls Windsor-Buchans, today expressed outrage with news the Furey Government has hired failed Liberal Candidate Rodney Mercer to a six figure salary in a brand new position.

Mr. Mercer, who was the Liberals 2021 candidate in the district of Exploits and served in former Premier Dwight Ball’s office, has been appointed to a new position, without any competition, and given a new office with travel, rent and other related costs in Grand Falls Windsor.

“Every day I am getting calls from seniors who are looking for affordable housing or a grant to fix up their home but there is no money available. However, to see $100,000 suddenly appear to hire a former candidate and longtime Liberal is disheartening,” said Forsey.

“This is nothing but blatant patronage to allow a defeated candidate to have a six-figure income while he campaigns again for the election in 2025,” said Tibbs.

“The Premier is good at creating jobs in his own office for political pals, but can’t address the healthcare crisis facing Newfoundland and Labrador.”

Both MHA’s noted Government has repeatedly broken its word on reopening the 24 hour emergency at the Dr. Hugh Twomey Centre in Botwood and has not made a commitment to the Lionel Kelland Hospice in Grand Falls Windsor.

“The priorities of this government are in total disorder. Almost 100,000 people don’t have a family doctor in our province and government refuses to act, yet the moment a Liberal friend needs a pay cheque, a job is created,” said Forsey.

“The people of Newfoundland and Labrador deserve better than this from their government.”
