(January 7, 2022) – David Brazil, PC Official Opposition Leader and Shadow Minister for Labrador Affairs, says the Canadian Armed Forces should be called to help distribute vaccinations in Labrador, which is the region hardest hit by the on-going Omicron wave across Newfoundland and Labrador.
“Right now, Labrador is in a crisis not seen since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. The case counts, on a per-capita basis, are very concerning, especially when considering the vulnerable populations in the region,” said Brazil.
“Nova Scotia has asked for military support for their booster dose rollout, and I believe it’s time for Premier Furey to do the same to help the situation in Labrador.”
Brazil says government is playing catch up right in Labrador, with the situation worsening daily.
“Military support could be used to assist remote parts of the region, ensure vaccine distribution is rapid and take pressure off the dozens of healthcare workers who are isolating in the region. The entire province is facing extraordinary numbers, but Labrador is going through a very difficult time right now and needs all the support available,” said Brazil.
“We’ve always known Labrador was an especially vulnerable region of our province in the two years prior to the situation unfolding today. Now, we’re facing the worst of the pandemic to date in the area. Labradorians should not feel forgotten, they should feel supported. It’s time for the Furey government to support the people of Labrador through this difficult time.”
