(January 14, 2022) – Helen Conway Ottenheimer, PC Official Opposition Shadow Minister Responsible for Women and Gender Equality and MHA for Harbour Main, is calling on government to ensure sustainable funding for the Blue Door program in the 2022 provincial budget.

The Blue Door Program, operated by Thrive Community Youth Network, offers support for those choosing to leave the sex trade, remove themselves from sexual exploitative situations, and escape human trafficking.

“Programs like Blue Door are important parts of our community to assist vulnerable populations to leave difficult situations. Those who choose to leave sex work often need extra support in transitioning into a new phase of their lives, whether through educational opportunities or assistance finding sustainable housing,” said Conway Ottenheimer.

“For those escaping sexual exploitation and trafficking, these supports are especially critical. These situations are not limited to urban parts of our province – they are needed in every corner of our province.”

The program received federal funding in 2017, which is due to expire in February of this year. Conway Ottenheimer says if the federal government does not continue funding the program, the provincial government needs to step up.

“Our community needs these supports to help our most vulnerable transition to a new phase of their lives, or to escape the violence of trafficking and exploitation. The services offered by Blue Door are used primarily by women, but also transgender and non-binary people need these supports,” said Conway Ottenheimer.

“Government needs to step up and ensure these groups get the support they need. We must ensure these programs get sustainable funding for as long as they are so desperately needed throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.”
