(February 4, 2022) – Lloyd Parrott, PC Official Opposition Shadow Minister of Industry, Energy, and Technology and MHA for Terra Nova, is calling on the Minister of Industry, Energy, and Technology to act now to ensure Newfoundlanders and Labradorians don’t miss out on employment on the Bay du Nord project.

“The Bay du Nord project appears to be moving ahead, which is good news for our province. Government needs to remember the oil and gas located in the Bay du Nord area belongs to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador – so jobs and economic spin-off should be top priority,” said Parrott.

“The jobs created through the construction of an associated platform should also belong to the people of this province. The Liberals must not negotiate away our jobs.”

Parrott continued to detail the impact, which jobs and local contracts can have on our province’s economy.

“The biggest impact which the Bay du Nord project can have on our province is to put people back to work. This project must employ Newfoundlanders and Labradorians first,” said Parrott.

“I understand that the hull of the platform cannot be built in this province, but there are many other things that can be done here including project management, engineering, mechanical outfitting, and construction of modules and key components.”

Parrott challenged the Liberal Minister to stand up for local jobs, a challenge Parrot repeated from this past fall.

“When the House of Assembly last met, I asked the Minister to ensure that any changes to the Bay du Nord framework agreement would only be made if it resulted in a greater number of jobs for this province, this is a question which I will continue to challenge the Minister on,” promised Parrott.

“Anything less than the maximum employment of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians is unacceptable and a failure of the Liberal government to support our residents – now is the time to put Newfoundlanders and Labradorians first,” concluded Parrott.
