(February 8, 2022) – Craig Pardy, PC Official Opposition Shadow Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts and Recreation, and MHA for Bonavista, is seeking clarity on rules surrounding sporting events and gatherings in the face of COVID-19.
“We are all delighted to see curlers take to the sheet and compete, but constituents are calling my office questioning if there is an inconsistency with the plans for sporting events in Newfoundland and Labrador. Hockey teams, for example, are unable to compete, rather just limited to scrimmages among teams,” said Pardy.
“Safety has to be paramount, let there be no question of that, but I think it’s important for the Chief Medical Officer of Health to explain at today’s briefing why one sporting event can take place, while other athletes look on from the sidelines.”
Pardy says similar questions are being asked about faith gatherings in the province.
“Those who gather to worship are voicing similar concerns, particularly when compared to the bar and lounge industry and the recent relaxing of restrictions. I think it’s important that churches, temples, mosques, and other faith-based services have an understanding of what the path forward looks like,” said Pardy.
“We all must do our part to protect ourselves and our communities from COVID-19, but I think clarity would be welcome for those who wish to take in a hockey game or attend a service. I’m hoping for clarity on the path forward for these groups at today’s briefing.”
