Another week, another record – still no action on rising cost of fuel: Wakeham
Wakeham says if Minister Coady refuses to act, it’s time for Premier Furey to step in and finally take action to lower the cost of living in Newfoundland and Labrador.

(February 9, 2022) – Tony Wakeham, PC Official Opposition Shadow Minister of Finance and MHA for Stephenville-Port au Port, says if Minister Coady refuses to act, it’s time for Premier Furey to step in and finally take action to lower the cost of living in Newfoundland and Labrador.

“Yet another record increase in the price of gas will hit the province tomorrow and the Liberal government is happy to sit back and watch Newfoundlanders and Labradorians struggle as a result. I’ve been very clear with what options are before government to help ease the pressure, but silence is their answer,” said Wakeham.

“Another increase at the pumps means another increase at the grocery store or another increase in a heating bill. It’s putting Newfoundlanders and Labradorians living on low and fixed incomes – especially our seniors – in a difficult spot. Now is the time for government to finally act and put money back in the pockets of the people of our province.”

Wakeham says he has offered solutions to Minister Coady, who refuses to take action. It’s time for Premier Furey to show leadership.

“The Minister of Finance is content to see the cost of living continue to skyrocket. She must be happy with what she’s seeing – otherwise she would have acted by now. If the Minister is unwilling to lead, it’s time for the Premier to take action,” said Wakeham.

“The Premier could introduce a home heating fuel rebate program, he could eliminate the tax on tax paid on gasoline, he could order a review of the five cents on gas due to Come by Chance, he could pause further gas tax increases. Or, he could sit back and let the people of the province suffer. The Premier has a choice.”
