(February 14, 2022) – David Brazil, PC Official Opposition Leader and MHA for Conception Bay East-Bell Island, is calling on Premier Furey, Ministers O’Regan and Hutchings, and MP Jones to address media reports which call into question the future of the Bay du Nord project.

“The Premier, Ministers O’Regan and Hutchings, as well as federal officials will all be present for today’s update on the Muskrat Falls project financing. Surely, we can get a definitive answer from all those involved on the future of the Bay du Nord project, directly from the mouths of those involved,” said Brazil.

“Rate mitigation relies on funds given to the province through the Hibernia Dividend agreement. If the future of Newfoundland and Labrador’s offshore oil and gas industry is in question, then so is the rate mitigation deal. The Premier and Federal Ministers must address these questions today.”

Brazil is calling for full transparency regarding the situation surrounding the Bay du Nord project at today’s update.

“Minister Hutchings has not stated her position on the project or the deadlock in cabinet – what is her position? MP Jones has also not commented publicly on the situation and the importance of this project to our province’s future,” said Brazil.

“We need a united voice of support for this project to show the Federal Liberals the importance of this project to Newfoundland and Labrador. We cannot ignore this critical issue, as the Bay du Nord project and the offshore more broadly plays a direct role in these rate mitigation talks.”
