(February 15, 2022) – Paul Dinn, PC Official Opposition Shadow Minister for Health and Community Services and MHA for Topsail - Paradise, is calling for continuous glucose monitoring funding to be included in the upcoming provincial budget.

A continuous glucose monitor is a device used to monitor blood glucose on a continual basis by insulin-requiring people with diabetes. Research has shown that a continuous glucose monitor can allow for better management of diabetes.

“Newfoundland and Labrador has the highest rate of diabetes in the country and there is a responsibility for government to provide adequate supports. If someone with diabetes has the tools to better manage, it will reduce complications that can arise,” said Dinn.

“Reducing major complications such as strokes, heart attacks, blindness, kidney failure and amputations would result in a net savings for our healthcare system and have a huge positive impact on those living with diabetes.”

The PC Official Opposition, in particular Mr. Paul Dinn, have been vocal advocates for providing supports to those with diabetes in Newfoundland and Labrador.

“Our 2021 General Election blueprint spoke of our commitment to remove the age cap and ensure that MCP covers the cost of insulin pumps for all persons with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus. Adding continuous glucose monitoring on top of enhancing access to insulin pumps is a proactive approach to healthcare that the people of Newfoundland and Labrador deserve,” said Dinn.

“As we await the release of the Health Accord we have to be cognizant that there remain health care issues that require immediate attention. We have to eliminate the stigma that diabetes is the result of poor lifestyle choices and providing continuous glucose monitoring for those with diabetes is a common sense investment that will pay dividends.”
