Ottawa Re-announcing Infrastructure Money

Instead of Stepping Up to Help NL with New Stimulus

Kevin Parsons, Municipal Affairs Critic for the Official Opposition, says, “The $400 million that federal minister Judy Foote is touting for infrastructure is the 10-year ‘Building Canada Fund (BCF)’ money announced in 2014, not new stimulus funding that our province urgently needs to weather the ‘unprecedented’ fiscal crisis brought on by the collapse of oil prices.”

“Now is the time for the provincial and federal Liberals from this province to stand up for Newfoundland and Labrador by publicly challenging Ottawa to provide the new stimulus funding we urgently need,” he said.

“Our government submitted a list of BCF projects to Ottawa for approval in 2015,” said Parsons. “The fund referenced is not new money for provinces hit hard by the oil-price crunch. It was there long before the price of oil dropped, and would have been there for us to spend even if the price of oil had remained above $100 a barrel over the 10-year Building Canada Fund announced by previous government.”

“Liberals in this province need to be standing up for Newfoundland and Labrador,” he said.
