(March 4, 2022) – David Brazil, PC Official Opposition Leader, and Lloyd Parrott, PC Official Opposition Shadow Minister for Industry, Energy, and Technology, are expressing dismay at the Furey government’s inability to secure the future of Newfoundland and Labrador’s offshore oil and gas industry.
“Another delay in a decision on the Bay du Nord project means even more uncertainty for the people who rely on the oil and gas industry to raise their families and ensure a future here in Newfoundland and Labrador. The future of the oil and gas industry rests with the Bay du Nord project, and Premier Furey is sitting back to allow Ottawa to decide the future of Newfoundland and Labrador,” said Brazil.
“Minister O’Regan’s inability to demonstrate the importance of this project to his Liberal cabinet colleagues is jeopardizing the future of our province. Thousands of families will be effected, countless businesses will look elsewhere, and the people of our province will be left behind.”
Parrott says the Bay du Nord project is an example of how a responsible development can secure the green future for Newfoundland and Labrador.
“This project has seen four years of assessment, with Equinor emphasizing their efforts to move ahead with a carbon-neutral project. This is exactly the kind of project we should be encouraging. Premier Furey and Minister O’Regan refusing to stand up for Newfoundland and Labrador and fight for this project is disgraceful,” said Parrott.
“Ministers from Quebec and British Columbia are deciding what the future of Newfoundland and Labrador will hold, while the Premier and Minister are not doing enough to ensure a future for the industry here in our province. The provincial and federal Liberal governments should be ashamed to let the future of our province slip away.”
