(March 23, 2022) – David Brazil, PC Official Opposition Leader and MHA for Conception Bay East–Bell Island, and Lloyd Parrott, PC Official Opposition Shadow Minister of Industry, Energy, and Technology are calling on the Liberals to immediately come clean about their intentions for the offshore oil and gas industry in Newfoundland and Labrador.
“My office has been contacted by industry officials who have indicated that this year’s offshore land sale has been delayed. I’m calling on Premier Furey to immediately come clean and to confirm why this has occurred and why he is okay with delaying the land sale and thus delaying exploration in our province,” said Brazil.
Brazil says a clear pattern is emerging, demonstrating the Liberal’s lack of commitment to our offshore industry.
“The alleged deferral of the land sale bid process follows the cancellation of the seismic program, indecisiveness on Bay du Nord, and a lack of effective advocacy from Premier Furey. I question the commitment of the federal Liberals to our offshore after yesterday’s announcement with the NDP,” added Brazil.
Parrott says it’s becoming more and more clear the federal Liberals are calling the shots on our offshore industry, with Newfoundland and Labrador’s interests ignored.
“Ottawa is dictating the future of Newfoundland and Labrador, while the Furey Liberals refuse to stand up for our industry and for Newfoundland and Labrador. We’re seeing photo ops, not action to support our offshore industry and the people of our province,” said Parrott.
“Step by step, the Furey Liberals are making it more difficult for offshore exploration to occur and making our province less and less attractive for industry investment. It’s bad for workers and their families, it’s bad for our local economy, and it’s bad for Newfoundland and Labrador.”
