Opposition Asks Minister Tootoo to Extend Food Fishery

Kevin Parsons, Fisheries Critic for the Official Opposition, has written to federal Fisheries Minister Hunter Tootoo, asking him to “extend the duration of the 2016 recreational groundfish fishery in Newfoundland and Labrador to promote safety, fairness and tourism in our province.”

In the letter, Parsons told the Minister: “Your predecessors have repeatedly restricted the recreational groundfish fishery in our province to just a few days each year while residents and tourists in other Atlantic Canadian provinces have been able to fish for much longer.

“Recent reports on the status of fish stocks do not justify this discriminatory treatment of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.

“With such a short time each year to fish, some people in our province have been placing their lives at risk by opting to take to the water when the weather is poor and sea conditions are unsafe rather than miss the narrow window of opportunity.

“Extending the season will not only make our fishery safer, but also promote tourism opportunities in Newfoundland and Labrador at a time when low oil prices and the low dollar mean stimulating tourism growth in our province is both urgent and important.”
