(March 31, 2022) – David Brazil, PC Official Opposition Leader and MHA for Conception Bay East-Bell Island, says celebrating the 73rd anniversary of Confederation means asking for equal standing within Canada.
“Newfoundland and Labrador has brought so much into Canada, whether our rich fisheries, our abundant oil and gas resources, or the beauty of our home attracting tourists to our shores. Since joining Confederation in 1949, Canada has profited from our resources, but all too often it seems Newfoundland and Labrador is not seeing the benefits,” said Brazil.
“It’s no secret that Ottawa has mismanaged our fishery since Confederation, a pattern that continues with the most recent decision to shut down the mackerel fishery and suggesting that our harvesters should plant sea grass. Regarding oil and gas, Ottawa continues to jeopardize the future of our industry and our jobs by delaying Bay du Nord and the land sale process.
“A strong Newfoundland and Labrador demands strong advocacy to the federal government to ensure our resources are utilized for the benefit of our province, something Premier Furey has failed to provide.”
Brazil says equalization is another federal program where Newfoundland and Labrador is not seeing equal treatment with other provinces.
“Newfoundland and Labrador has many unique challenges which require unique solutions. The equalization program is weighted to benefit Quebec, while Newfoundland and Labrador is left behind. The Furey Liberal government has not advocated for changes to the formula, instead choosing to accept the unacceptable,” said Brazil.
“In healthcare, per-capita funding does not recognize the greater need of the Newfoundland and Labrador healthcare system. We want a strong Canada, but we need a strong Newfoundland and Labrador. History has shown us that only happens when we stand up to Ottawa and demand what is right.”
