(April 06, 2022) – David Brazil, PC Official Opposition Leader, and Tony Wakeham, PC Official Opposition Shadow Minister of Finance, say the PC Official Opposition received unanimous support from the House of Assembly for action in tomorrow’s budget on the rising cost of living in Newfoundland and Labrador.

“The people of Newfoundland and Labrador need help. Under the Liberal government, life in our province has gotten more and more expensive. With international pressures and Liberal inaction, it’s only gotten worse for the hardworking people of our province trying to make ends meet,” said Brazil.

“Our caucus has been advocating relentlessly for relief for the people of Newfoundland and Labrador, including tax breaks at the gas pumps and a home heating fuel rebate program for our province. With unanimous support of the House, we expect the Liberal government to follow through on the commitments agreed to by the House of Assembly.”

Wakeham says the Liberal government has dragged its feet on meaningful action to support our province, but remains hopeful solutions will be seen in tomorrow’s budget.

“The Minister of Finance has gone from stating there’s nothing she can do, to announcing assistance that she herself admitted did not go far enough. The Minister has a chance to get her cost of living plan right in tomorrow’s budget – it’s better late than never,” said Wakeham.

“We need meaningful support for people throughout our province who are feeling the cost of living pinch. Our seniors, people living on low-and fixed incomes, and middle class families trying to juggle household finances all need support in tomorrow’s budget. With the endorsement of the House of Assembly, the Minister has the responsibility and expectation of the legislature to follow through and finally help the people of our province.”
