NL Opposition Concerned about Increase of Marine Atlantic Rates

Barry Petten, Transportation Critic for the Official Opposition, said increasing Marine Atlantic ferry rates is the exact opposite of what the federal government should be doing to stimulate growth in our province's tourism sector during a fiscal crisis - and he is urging the Ball government to be vocal in telling their federal counterparts how damaging their policy will be for Newfoundland and Labrador.

Petten said, "With the very low Canadian dollar, American tourists will have a very good reason to come north for their vacation this year, but the Marine Atlantic rate increase is just the thing to deter them from making the trip across the Gulf to our province."

"In fact, with oil prices so low, Ottawa cannot justify maintaining oil surcharges or raising rates for ferry users. What they should be doing is lowering rates to account for lower fuel prices and to stimulate tourism in Newfoundland and Labrador at a time when our province badly needs federal stimulus measures."

Petten said everyone recalls that some members of the Ball Caucus were very vocal in the past about Marine Atlantic rates and service. "We need to be united as Newfoundlanders and Labradorians in voicing our disagreement with this decision and demanding that rates be lowered," he said.
