(May 4, 2022) – Tony Wakeham, PC Official Opposition Shadow Minister of Finance and MHA for Stephenville-Port au Port, is pleased to see the Liberal government commit to further relief for the cost of living crisis in Newfoundland and Labrador.
“This afternoon, the House of Assembly voted unanimously to introduce immediate relief measures for the cost of living crisis, beyond what was announced in the 2022 provincial budget. The private members bill debated this evening shows the importance of listening to the people of the province and taking tangible action to assist in the current crisis,” said Wakeham.
“While the resolution is non-binding, the Liberal Government admitted more help is needed to help the people of our province. For months, the PC Official Opposition and I have been telling stories of the people of our province trying to make ends meet. Our caucus has offered solutions, while the Liberals have not stepped up with supports. I hope they finally got the message.”
Wakeham says the advocacy of the PC Official Opposition caucus will only continue.
“Every day people are calling our offices, are approaching us at grocery stores, and taking every opportunity to tell their stories of struggling to make ends meet. Everyone has a story, whether it’s the senior choosing to cut their trips into town from twice to once a week to save on gas, to the homeowner whose home heating bill has doubled in recent months,” said Wakeham.
“We will continue to advocate and demand action from this Liberal government. The people of Newfoundland and Labrador have had enough. It’s time for meaningful action on the cost of living in our province.”
