(May 6, 2022) – Pleaman Forsey, PC Official Opposition Shadow Minister of Forestry and Agriculture and MHA for Exploits, says the rising cost of fertilizer is yet another way the cost of living is being felt throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.
“The cost of fertilizer has doubled for many in our province, putting farmers throughout Newfoundland and Labrador in a difficult position. They’re concerned about the future of their farms if the costs continue to rise, as fertilizer and fuel continue to get more and more expensive,” said Forsey.
“On top of that, higher costs to the farmer could lead to higher prices in the grocery aisle. This situation doesn’t just effect the industry, it will be felt throughout our province when people head to their local grocery.”
Forsey says government needs to listen to the farmers and work toward relief.
“The problem is driven by international issues, but that doesn’t change the effect on life here in Newfoundland and Labrador. We need to explore local alternatives to international fertilizers to help the industry through these difficult times. Farmers are concerned their farms won’t survive the season with these skyrocketing costs,” said Forsey.
“These price increases are having the opposite effect. If farmers have to reconsider the size of their crop or the future of their farm, that should be cause for great concern for everyone in our province. It’s incumbent on government to listen to the concerns of farmers and find solutions to ensure the agriculture industry is strong, and not jeopardized by increased prices.”
