(May 20, 2022, St. John's) – Joedy Wall, PC MHA for Cape St. Francis, says stories of volunteers questioning whether they can continue offering their services are a very concerning aspect of the continuing cost of living crisis.
“I’ve spoken with a constituent who for the last few decades has offered free drives to cancer treatments and has delivered food hampers to those in need. Now, this gentleman is questioning whether the cost of fuel is too great for him to continue his service,” said Wall.
“Volunteers are the lifeblood of our communities. To have this gentleman reconsider is a difficult symptom of the cost of living crisis gripping Newfoundland and Labrador. It shows just one more way this crisis affects everyone in our province, and highlights how important it is for government to take meaningful action to support the people of Newfoundland and Labrador.”
Wall echoed calls from the PC Opposition for opportunities for cost of living relief.
“High gas prices mean more tax income from the HST and from royalties. Government can take additional revenues to support the people of our province through a home heating fuel rebate, through tax relief, and through other programs of support for those who need it, including our dedicated volunteers,” said Wall.
“The Liberal government can take action here at home to help mitigate these extraordinary increases. Everyone in our province is feeling the effects in some form. It’s time for government to step up to the plate, take action, and ensure our communities can remain healthy through this crisis.”
