(June 9, 2022) – David Brazil, PC Official Opposition Leader and MHA for Conception Bay East-Bell Island, says Quebec Premier Francois Legault is being more transparent with the people of Newfoundland and Labrador than Premier Furey about the meeting between Premiers held yesterday in Quebec.
“While the Premier of Quebec was touting a meeting about hydroelectric development, Premier Furey made no such mention of any discussion regarding hydroelectric development in Labrador. Clearly, the Premier of Quebec sees an advantage coming from these meetings, while Premier Furey is being sheepish about the discussion,” said Brazil.
“You don’t have to be an historian to understand how significant any conversations between Quebec and Newfoundland and Labrador on hydroelectricity are to the future of our province. For Premier Furey to dance around such an important issue to our province is cause for concern.”
Brazil is calling on Furey to deliver a full debrief with the people of Newfoundland and Labrador regarding the latest conversations with Quebec regarding hydroelectricity.
“Let’s finally see some transparency from this government. The Premier can proactively release meeting minutes and agendas, he can sit with media for an extended press conference to answer all questions. He should know the stakes of any discussion with Quebec and he should understand the importance of being upfront with the people of Newfoundland and Labrador on any such conversations,” said Brazil.
“This is the Premier’s chance to finally be proactive with disclosure, rather than doing everything in his power to hide information from the people of our province. Premier, make it happen. Take this chance to be upfront with the people of our province: what are you giving away to Quebec?”
