(June 24, 2022) – Paul Dinn, PC Official Opposition Shadow Minister for Health and Community Services and MHA for Topsail-Paradise, is calling attention to the success of our provincial neighbours in recruiting doctors while the Furey Liberal government flounders.

Between April 2021 and March 2022, 163 doctors moved to Nova Scotia to practice medicine

“Our next door neighbour, Nova Scotia, just set a record for physician recruitment in the last year, while the Furey Liberal government continues to fail the people of Newfoundland and Labrador. We are both Atlantic Canadian provinces and we both have rural areas, so what’s the difference? I’ll tell you what the difference is,” said Dinn.

“After 7 years, this Liberal led government is out of touch and has failed to act.”

Over the previous three years in Nova Scotia, 130, 128, and 127 physicians were recruited. Meanwhile, physicians are fleeing Newfoundland and Labrador in droves.

Meanwhile, the Association of Psychology of Newfoundland and Labrador has characterized the situation in our province as a “mass exodus” in a report presented to Minister Haggie.

“Our healthcare system is being run by two doctors, Premier Furey and Minister Haggie, and it’s in the worst shape in years,” asid Dinn.

“If they can’t handle something within their expertise, how can we trust them to handle any other issue facing our province?”
