Liberals Hide Marble Mountain Report Citing Cabinet Confidence

After insisting when in opposition that “Cabinet confidence” should not be used to deny access to government reports that ought to be released, the provincial Liberals are now hiding a report on Marble Mountain citing “Cabinet confidence.”

The Official Opposition submitted an Access to Information request for a report recently submitted to the Department of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development on the finances of the Marble Mountain operation. The Marble Mountain Development Corporation is an agency of the provincial government.

But BTCRD Minister Chris Mitchelmore denied the Official Opposition a copy of the report, citing Cabinet confidence.

Steve Kent, Opposition Critic for the Office of Public Engagement said, “The report on Marble Mountain is not a Cabinet paper. It is a financial report, providing information to which the people of the province and the Official Opposition should have access. Attaching it to a Cabinet paper to hide it from disclosure flies in the face of the principles of openness and transparency that the Ball Liberals promised to uphold.”

Kent said the Minister should be reminded of the question the current Premier asked when he was Opposition Leader in the House of Assembly on April 14, 2014: “Since you now claim to be open, why are you hiding this plan behind the broad definition of Cabinet confidences and Bill 29?”
