Central Newfoundland’s healthcare crisis must be priority for Osborne: Forsey

(July 8, 2022) – Pleaman Forsey, PC Official Opposition MHA for Exploits, is reminding incoming Health Minister Tom Osborne of the healthcare disruptions facing the people of Central Newfoundland.

“Central Health recently announced temporary closures of emergency rooms in Harbour Breton, Fogo, New-Wes-Valley, Springdale, and Buchans. That means residents have to travel further for emergency care and puts strain on the hospitals in Gander and Grand Falls-Windsor. These closures are concerning for residents in the area, who risk being too far away from emergency care when it’s needed most,” said Forsey.

“Whether it’s these repeated emergency room closures or the many family doctors who have retired or taken positions in other provinces, Central Newfoundland is seeing some of the worst of the healthcare crisis gripping Newfoundland and Labrador. Minister Osborne must work to ensure Central Newfoundland is a priority to keep emergency rooms open and ensure doctors settle in the area.”

Forsey says pointing to national issues doesn’t change the fact that the people of Central Newfoundland are facing real challenges.

“Pointing to national healthcare issues does not keep emergency rooms open here at home. The fact is people need healthcare and they need it to be accessible. The Liberal Government’s inability to recruit doctors to rural areas has led to the crisis unfolding in our province today,” said Forsey.

“Minister Osborne cannot forget about Central Newfoundland as he moves into his portfolio. The region has been neglected by the Liberal Government and it’s the people on the ground who are being put at risk as a result. I’m hopeful for action from the new Minister to help the Central region and finally ensure healthcare is accessible to all in Newfoundland and Labrador.”
