(July 13, 2022) – Tony Wakeham, PC Official Opposition Shadow Minister of Finance and MHA for Stephenville-Port au Port, says the Liberal government has 50 days left to stop the sugar tax from taking more money out of the pockets of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.
“On September 1, just 50 days from now, the Liberal Sugar Tax will cost Newfoundlanders and Labradorians more each time they go to the grocery store,” said Wakeham.
“I am once again calling on Minister Coady and the entire Liberal Government to scrap this tax before it comes into effect. Not only will this tax increase the cost of items such as juice boxes, but it also jeopardizes local jobs.”
Wakeham says the Liberal government’s budget promised no tax increases. He’s calling on the Finance Minister to live up to that commitment.
“The people of this province cannot afford to pay more while they are already struggling to afford the skyrocketing costs of food, fuel, and living,” said Wakeham.
“This Liberal Government continues to ignore the problems people face. With 50 days left to stop the Sugar Tax, I’m asking them to finally start listening to the people of the province who cannot bear another tax increase.”
