Opposition Questions Minister on Quin-Sea

Kevin Parsons, Fisheries Critic for the Official Opposition, is asking provincial Fisheries Minister Steve Crocker to provide an update on the application by Royal Greenland to purchase Quin Sea Fisheries Limited, which operates processing facilities in six communities in our province.

"People want to know when and what the province will decide, but they also want to be part of the discussion, considering the broader implications of this application," said Parsons.

The application went before the Fish Processing Licensing Board in December. The Official Opposition asked the Board to consider several questions when examining the application and making a recommendation to the Minister.

Those questions pertained to trust agreements, the pool of resources available to operations in this province, foreign influence, fleet separation, job security and CETA.

"Where does this application stand? The Minister has a responsibility to bring the people of the province in on the discussion. Are there any NL companies that have an interest in buying Quin Sea rather than selling to a foreign investor? Has Minister Crocker spoken with the Federal Minister about concerns that the inshore fishing quotas may be transferred to a company owned by a foreign country? People have a right to expect openness and transparency on decisions that affect them and their province," he said.

"It's time for the Fisheries Minister to provide an update to the people of the province," said Parsons.
