Inflation fanning flames of cost of living crisis in NL: Wakeham
Wakeham says spiking inflation is just one more reason the Liberal Government must support the people of Newfoundland and Labrador through this crisis.

(July 20, 2022) – Tony Wakeham, PC Official Opposition Shadow Minister of Finance and MHA For Stephenville-Port au Port, says spiking inflation is just one more reason the Liberal Government must support the people of Newfoundland and Labrador through this crisis.

“This morning, Statistics Canada released their inflation statistics for June 2022. The cost of living in this province has increased by 8.2%, over June 2021. This demonstrates that the cost of essential items such as food, housing, and fuel keeps skyrocketing, making it increasingly hard for families and seniors to balance their checkbooks,” said Wakeham.

Wakeham continued to call on the Liberal Government to take action to lower the cost of living.

“The Liberal Government continues to ignore the trouble that the rising cost of living is causing every Newfoundlander and Labradorian. The Liberals ignored the rising cost of gasoline for almost a year before finally lowering the gas tax and have still have not delivered the promised home heating rebate to offset the cost of home heating oil for last winter,” said Wakeham.

“To make matters worse, the Liberal government plans to take more money from people on September 1 when they implement their sugar tax. Now is the time – not a year from now – for the Liberal Government to stop with the tax increases and get to work to help the people of Newfoundland and Labrador.”
