(July 22, 2022) – : Loyola O’Driscoll, PC Official Opposition Shadow Minister for the Office of the Chief Information Officer and MHA for Ferryland, is looking for an update from Minister Stoodley given the sheer scale of people affected by what’s been called the worst cyberattack in Canadian history.
“Eastern Health has indicated that the number of staff and patients who have been impacted by the cyberattack has grown, and will continue to grow; this causes me great concern as there are potentially many Newfoundlanders and Labradorians who are unaware that their personal information was accessed,” said O’Driscoll.
O’Driscoll called on Minster Stoodley to provide more information to the people of the province.
“The Liberal Government, specifically Minister Stoodley, must be open and transparent with the consequences of this cyberattack and the cyber security of all government platforms, to ensure that the
people of the province can have confidence that every precaution is being taken,” continues O’Driscoll.
O’Driscoll outlined a number of questions that Minister Stoodley must answer:
What is government doing to ensure that an individual’s personal information is not used
wrongfully to access other government systems or services such as Motor Registration and Vital
Statistics?
What has government done to increase the cyber security of all government platforms?
Has a full cyber security review been done of IT infrastructure of all departments and crown
corporations, boards, and agencies?
Is the Minister confident that the people of the province will not fall victim to another cyberattack?
“The Minister must provide information to give confidence to the people of the province, simply
suggesting they change their passwords is not enough,” concluded O’Driscoll.
