(October 21, 2022, St. John’s) – Craig Pardy, PC Official Opposition Shadow Minister for Fisheries and MHA for Bonavista, says it’s time for Newfoundland and Labrador to take control over the rich resources of our province’s oceans – and halt Ottawa’s overreach into our fishing industry.

On Wednesday, Pardy introduced a Private Members Resolution aimed at establishing joint fisheries management between Newfoundland and Labrador and the Government of Canada.

“It’s far past time our province had a seat at the table when decisions are made by Ottawa that affect our most historic industry. Decisions about the future of our fisheries should not be made in isolation from Ottawa. Direct input on decision making is essential for our province to ensure a sustainable, prosperous fishery,” said Pardy.

“The time is long-past due for Newfoundland and Labrador to stand up and not simply roll over when Ottawa is making decisions that affect the people who rely on our industry.”

Pardy says he was pleased to see support from all corners of the House of Assembly for the resolution in the House of Assembly. He hopes this means government will finally listen to those in the fishing industry and ensure our province has a seat at the table.

“Let us work together to make sure Newfoundland and Labrador’s voice heard in Ottawa. Federal mismanagement of our fisheries has gone on long enough. Having Newfoundland and Labrador’s voice at the decision-making table is an important step to ensuring our interests are protected,” said Pardy.

“Only together can we ensure a strong future for the fisheries of Newfoundland and Labrador.”
