Liberals cannot forget supports for most vulnerable in 2023 budget: Pardy
Craig Pardy says the most vulnerable in our province are being left behind as the cost of living crisis continues throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.

(January 19, 2023, St. John’s) – Craig Pardy, PC Official Opposition Shadow Minister for Poverty Reduction and MHA for Bonavista, says the most vulnerable in our province are being left behind as the cost of living crisis continues throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.

According to a national study, food bank usage is expected to increase 30 per cent across Canada in 2023, with increased use of food banks by children and seniors.

“Food bank usage is becoming a fact of life for too many in Newfoundland and Labrador. Those who were already struggling are making impossible choices to make ends meet and keep food on the table. Now, we’re seeing people with full-time jobs having to go to food banks to support their families,” said Pardy.

“The cost of living crisis in our province is only expected to grow in 2023. As the Liberal Government prepares the 2023 budget, it’s critical they not forget enhanced supports for the most vulnerable in our society. People are already struggling and those numbers will only grow. We need action to prevent more people from slipping into poverty in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Pardy says Food First NL having to close its community food helpline is only the latest barrier for those who need support to put food on their table.

“Food First NL’s community food helpline is helping connect people to their next meal. It is an important service and needs support to be able to continue in our province. It’s Food First NL’s role to provide this service, but it’s incumbent on the Liberal Government to support the most vulnerable in our society,” said Pardy.

“I look forward to continuing work with the All-Party Committee on Basic Income to work toward solutions, but committee recommendations tomorrow will not help those who are already struggling today. We need tangible action to support our most vulnerable residents as the cost of living continues to rise in Newfoundland and Labrador.”
