Liberals close legislature to avoid healthcare and cost of living crisis: Petten
Barry Petten says the Liberal Government continues to ignore the multiple crisis facing our province by doing everything in their power to keep the House of Assembly closed.

(April 6, 2023, St. John’s) – Barry Petten, PC Official Opposition House Leader and MHA for Conception Bay South, says the Liberal Government continues to ignore the multiple crisis facing our province by doing everything in their power to keep the House of Assembly closed.

“Since 2016, the Liberals have closed the House of Assembly early for Easter Break and continued their tradition this year. The people’s legislature already averages the fewest sitting days of any legislature in the country – but the Liberals decided they needed one more day off,” said Petten.

“While the cost of living continues to put pressure on families and seniors in our province, while emergency rooms are closed and 136,000 people in our province do not have a family doctor, the Liberals have decided they have other priorities aside from the business of the people of our province. It’s shameful.”

Petten says the decision to close the House of Assembly rests solely with the Government House Leader.

“The Liberals make the schedule and can decide on a whim when the House is open or closed. Instead of engaging in debate and working towards solutions for the people of our province, the Liberals wanted another day off,” said Petten.

“The hardworking people of Newfoundland and Labrador deserve better than a government that avoids debate and avoids working toward solutions on behalf of our province.”
