(May 5, 2023, St. John’s) – As Mental Health Week 2023 draws to a close, it is important to remember the ongoing challenges faced by individuals and communities dealing with mental health issues.

Paul Dinn, PC Official Opposition Shadow Minister for Health and Community Services and MHA for Topsail-Paradise, says it is vital to ensure that the voices of those with lived experience are heard and valued in creating effective mental health policies and services. He notes that the current Liberal Government has failed to do so.

"Despite numerous calls for action and recommendations from mental health experts and advocates, the Liberal Government has consistently ignored the needs and concerns of those with lived experience. This has resulted in a system that is inadequate and inaccessible to many who need it,” said Dinn.

“We must demand that the government listen and take action to improve access to long-term mental health supports.”

Dinn emphasizes that mental health is a year-round concern that affects people of all ages and backgrounds, and that everyone has a role to play in promoting understanding and reducing stigma around mental health issues.

"By practicing empathy and actively listening to those with mental health challenges, we can create a more compassionate and supportive community for all. Let's work together to ensure that everyone who needs mental health support receives it, and that they feel heard, valued, and supported in their journey to wellness,” said Dinn.

“Let us remember the importance of empathy, compassion, and listening in supporting those dealing with mental health challenges. We must continue to advocate for improved long-term mental health policies and services, and ensure that those with lived experience have a meaningful voice in shaping the mental health landscape in our communities.”
