(May 19, 2023, St. John’s) – Pleaman Forsey, PC Official Opposition Shadow Minister for Forestry and MHA for Exploits, is raising concern about fire preparedness as forest fire season ramps up in Newfoundland and Labrador.
“Last year’s fires in Central Newfoundland are still fresh in our memory. Everyone must do their part to prevent the next fire. With one of the province’s waterbombers still not functioning, it’s even more important to do your part to ensure a safe holiday long weekend,” said Forsey.
“An access to information request found multiple instances where water bomber crews were unavailable from July 1 to August 31 of last year. It’s crucial that not only are water bombers accessible, but they are fully crewed in the event of an emergency. I call on the Minister to ensure not only are these aircraft staffed, but a solution is found to get the province’s fifth water bomber back into service.”
Forsey says fire safety is everyone’s responsibility.
“Be sure to check for any local fire bans, always build a fire in a pit and away from structures, ensure the area is cleared of debris, and never light a fire with gasoline. Never leave a fire unattended, keep a bucket of water nearby, and make sure the fire is a manageable size. Always ensure a fire is completely doused before leaving the area,” said Forsey.
“To report a fire, dial 1-866-709-3473. By protecting our forests, we can insure wildlife, industry, and residents alike can enjoy our forests for years to come.”
